Across Europe, hate speech and hate crime are increasing. They attack human dignity, harm democratic values, and affect migrants, minorities, refugees, and LGBTIQ+ people the most. UNITY – Uniting Youth Power Against Intolerance is a European project working in Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Romania to tackle these issues.
Here is what the project does:
Prevention – helping young people recognize and resist hate speech and disinformation. Support – giving victims of hate speech and hate crime stronger protection and visibility. Empowerment – training and involving youth as active voices for tolerance. Collaboration – building coalitions of civil society organisations that can influence policies at national and EU level.
Why focus on youth? Because young people are at the heart of change. They are often exposed to online hate, but they are also the ones with the creativity, energy, and digital skills to counter it. UNITY equips youth with tools like critical thinking, empathy, and media literacy so they can stand against intolerance in their schools, communities, and online spaces.
By the end of the project, UNITY will leave behind accessible educational resources, youth-led initiatives, and stronger civil society networks working for inclusive societies across Europe.
